Kruse prides himself on stepping outside compositional boundaries, providing traditional flavors with post-modern flair, bringing zest to the world music culture as well as the industry as a whole. To top it off, he practices his musical iconoclasm on an instrument he made himself. “I make my own flutes and I’ll play what I want on them!” he exudes. “In the face of established traditions and how the West fawns all over ‘gurus,’ I remember the sources of these traditions: Someone fashioned an instrument and ran his or her emotions through it!” And it’s worth noting that emotional power stands as a firm center of Kruse’s groundbreaking playing. He can also make that face without the flute.....
